Sampson Mordan bookmarks
Mordan and his company made many types of bookmarks, the most commonly seen have animals of some sort at the top. Dogs, pigs, foxes, elephants, owls ,ducks, pheasants, roosters, and fish can be seen sitting proudly at the top of Mordan bookmarks. Other objects were also modelled at the top of the bookmarks, like, a moon face, a magnifying glass, a four leaf clover, a shield, a ball and chain, the head of Queen Victoria and many other things. Mostly the bookmarks are made of silver but can also be found in gold. Another commonly found Mordan bookmark is the trowel, which is basically a bookmark which looks like a miniature builders trowel, these usually have a silver blade but the handles may be made from mother of pearl, onyx, silver, agate, bone or ivory and other materials.
Mordans silver bookmarks will normally carry a full set of english hallmarks on the blade, consisting of the lion passant, city letter, date letter and the Mordan registered silver mark relevant to the period.
